Can I Replace My Roof During Winter?

Don’t wait until spring to take care of your roof.

As temperatures begin to drop, many homeowners express concern about the approaching winter weather conditions. Can a new roof be installed during winter? While certain roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles and some flat roofing materials have special temperature requirements, Rampart Roofing, Inc. works all throughout the year by working around the weather forecasts.

Are you interested in replacing your roof over the winter? Here are some things to consider:

Winter Roof Inspections:

At Rampart Roofing, Inc., we schedule free roof inspections throughout the entire year. Normally, during the winter months, we schedule our morning inspections after 9:00 am. This is to ensure that any frost that develops on roofs overnight has a chance to thaw in the morning. In order to ensure the safety of our team members, we must be sure that all ice and snow is cleared before performing a roof inspection.

Roofing Materials:

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles, the most popular and common roofing material used for residential properties in the U.S., can be difficult to install in cold weather conditions. Asphalt shingles stiffen and become brittle and difficult to work with when exposed to cold temperatures. Ideally, asphalt shingles should be installed when temperatures outside reach 40°F or higher. This allows the asphalt shingles to maintain their elasticity and ability to adhere and form a seal properly.  Luckily in Colorado Springs, our weather patterns often change throughout the winter, allowing our crews to work around the weather forecasts.

Clay & Concrete Tile, and DECRA Stone-Coated Steel Roofing

Available in a varied selection of colors and shapes, clay and concrete tiles are popular roofing options for homeowners in Colorado Springs. DECRA stone-coated steel roofing also offers durable roofing in a variety of colors and profiles to choose from. Due to the nature of the installation processes, DECRA, clay, and concrete tiles can be installed all-year-round. Winter weather has very little effect on these materials, making them excellent choices for winter roof replacements. In addition to their strength and longevity, these materials are energy-efficient and can help you save money on heating and cooling bills.

EPDM, Modified Bitumen, and TPO Flat Roofing

Some flat roofing materials, such as TPO, can be installed during the winter. However, other materials like EPDM and Modified Bitumen roofing require higher temperatures. Much like asphalt shingles, EPDM and Modified Bitumen roofs use adhesives that have special temperature requirements for proper installation.
