2024 Colorado Roofing Industry Updates

Colorado’s roofing industry faced a challenging year in 2023, with the most significant hurdle being the material shortages. In 2023, we posted this update about the state of the roofing industry and how it affected homeowners. In this article, we’ll provide some updates.

Here’s a quick recap of how the roofing industry and homeowners were affected in 2023:

Material shortages: 2023 had a significant shortage of roofing materials, primarily asphalt shingles. This was due to a combination of factors, including:

Increased demand: The demand for new roofs surged due to several factors, such as the record-breaking hailstorms in Colorado, severe storms that affected areas like Wyoming, Texas, and Oklahoma, and hurricane damage that heavily impacted the southern United States. A housing boom in 2023 also contributed to the rise in demand for new roofing materials.

Labor shortages: The construction industry, including roofing companies, faced a labor shortage, further hindering production.

What does the current situation look like?

Material shortages have vastly improved in 2024 compared to last year. However, certain materials are still difficult to obtain. “It is back to normal for most manufacturers and materials. Owens Corning is still hard to get, and manufacturers are still doing allocation for suppliers.” says Samantha Costanzo, Rampart Roofing Inc. Production Manager.

How does this impact homeowners?

Higher costs: The material shortages in 2023 led to increased prices for roofing materials. While prices have stabilized somewhat, they are still higher than pre-shortage levels.

Limited choices: Homeowners may have had to compromise on the type, brand, or color of their desired roofing materials due to limited availability.

Project delays: Some roofing projects may have been delayed due to material shortages.

Looking ahead:

The roofing industry in Colorado is expected to remain busy in 2024. Material availability is expected to continue to improve.

We advise homeowners to:

  • Plan ahead.
  • Be flexible with your choices of materials.
  • Start the process early to secure materials and contractor availability.
  • Research roofing material options. (link to residential roofing material chart)
