Safety Tips for Halloween Roof Decorating

Are you planning to decorate your roof for Halloween? Follow these six safety tips.

Are you planning to decorate your home for Halloween this year? Follow these six roof safety tips to make sure your Halloween decorating project goes as smoothly as possible.

  1. Check your lights and extension cords. Save time and make the decorating process easier by preparing your decorations ahead of time. Before you begin to decorate, take some time to untangle your lights and power cords. Check your lights to ensure they are working and replace any bulbs that may be burnt out. Be sure to only use extension cords rated for outdoor use.
  2. Check for roof damage. Before you get on top of your roof, check for any areas that appear to have damage. Avoid walking on areas of your roof where you see missing or discolored shingles. These areas could be weak due to roof leaks or other damage. If you do see any signs of damage, call a professional roofer right away. Avoid placing decorations on any areas of your roof that appear to have damage.
  3. Use a sturdy ladder. More falls from roofs happen during the holiday season than any other time of year. Make sure you use a sturdy ladder and wear slip-resistant footwear if you plan to access your roof. Your ladder should be level and secure on a clear area before you decide to climb. Place your ladder 1 foot away from your home for every 4 feet of the ladder’s height. Additionally, make sure the ladder is extended 3 feet beyond the edge of your roof. If you plan to use a step ladder, make sure it is open and secure.
  4. Be careful not to damage your gutters. Your gutters can become damaged if they are weighed down too heavily. String lights and other lightweight decorations can be attached to your gutters, but avoid hanging larger, heavier objects from them.
  5. Protect your roof shingles. Never hang Halloween decorations from your shingles. Instead, try to mount the decorations to your gutters or fascia board. Nailing decorations to your shingles can let moisture in, leading to potential leaks and additional roof damage. Also, try to avoid using nails or staples when possible. These can cause damage to your roof and siding. For lights, we recommend using removable light clips, which can be easily attached to your home.
  6. Know when to ask for assistance. Prevent accidents by making sure you have someone to help nearby. Some decorations are easy to install yourself, while others require some teamwork. Also, it’s a good idea to have someone with you who can watch out and hold your ladder steady while you climb.
