How to Protect Your Roof

5 Tips for Protecting Your Roof

For most homeowners, the roof is often out of sight and out of mind unless a problem pops up. Don’t wait until a leak or storm damage occurs to take care of your roof. You can stay on top of roof maintenance and protect your home by following these five tips:

  1. Schedule regular roof inspections: Routine roof inspections are an essential part of home maintenance. By scheduling roof inspections regularly, your roofing contractor can make repairs as any problems arise. Even by conducting a visual inspection from the ground, you can look for signs of roof damage and prevent small issues from becoming larger.
  2. Clean your gutters: If you can safely access your roof, it’s a good idea to clean your gutters. This is an important thing to do if you do not have gutter guards. Leaves, twigs, pine needles, and other materials can build up and prevent water from running off your home properly.
  3. Trim nearby branches: Overhanging tree branches can cause damage by scraping against your roof. If you have asphalt shingles, this can lead to granule loss and shingle deterioration. The leaves and twigs from these branches can also block your gutters. If you can do so safely, try to trim any overhanging tree branches away from your roof.
  4. Practice roof safety when hanging holiday decorations: If you choose to decorate your home during the holidays, you can protect your roof by following these five tips.
  5. Prevent ice dams: Ice dams cause leaks and damage roofs. One thing you can do to prevent ice dams is to make sure your attic is properly insulated. Depending on your roof type, you may also consider installing heating tape or snow guards to further prevent ice dams from forming.
