How to De-Ice Your Roof

3 of the Best Ways to Remove Ice Buildup and Ice Dams

Ice buildup on your roof may look harmless, but it can lead to a lot of problems. How does ice affect your roof? It can block your gutters and cause your shingles to tear, leading to leaks later on. Ice dams are particularly notorious for causing roof leaks and interior water damage. Here’s how to safely remove ice dams and buildup from your roof. Only attempt these methods to de-ice your roof if you can safely access your roof and always remember to practice ladder safety.

  1. Use warm water
You can use warm water to remove small amounts of ice buildup. To do this, fill a spray bottle with warm water and target the affected areas. The ice will melt and drain from your roof and gutters. Be careful when handling hot water to avoid injury. This is a temporary, but quick solution.
  2. Apply de-icing agents
De-icing products can be used to remove thick patches of ice from your roof. However, it’s important to avoid using corrosive de-icing agents containing sodium chloride or calcium chloride. You don’t want to have another problem on your hands! Instead, look for products that contain ammonium sulfate or magnesium acetate. You can use powders, crystals, and pellets. For heavy buildup, you can also use liquid de-icing agents. Be sure to read the label and follow the instructions carefully for any de-icing product that you decide to use.
  3. Chip the ice away with an ice pick
This method requires more effort, patience, and precision. Begin by gently chipping the ice away from the inner areas of your gutters and downspouts. Use moderate pressure while doing this to avoid damaging your gutter system and roof. The ice will slowly begin to crack and break away.
