How Roofing Material Shortages Are Impacting Colorado Homeowners in 2023

Why You Shouldn’t Put Off Your Roof Replacement Project

Does your roof have hail damage? Like many Colorado homeowners this year, you may be planning to replace your roof. According to 9 News, 2023 is the year with the most large hail recorded in Colorado history. Because each hail season can bring multiple hailstorms, many Coloradans choose to wait until fall to replace their roofs. This can be a great way to avoid filing multiple homeowners insurance claims and getting multiple roof replacements. However, between severe weather and the roofing supply chain challenges of 2023, there are some things to consider before delaying your project.

Colorado isn’t the only state to be heavily impacted by severe weather in 2023. This year, other states like Texas, Oklahoma, and Wyoming have also been impacted by severe storms. The demand for new roofing materials is high right now. Roofing material manufacturers are behind in production as they struggle to keep up with the increased demand. Severe weather isn’t the only significant factor in the roofing supply shortage. Production dropped significantly during the recent COVID-19 pandemic and many roofing manufacturers still have not been able to catch up again.

What does this mean for homeowners in Colorado? “A lot of shingle manufacturers are out for months on certain types of shingles, colors, and local suppliers have limits on how much product they can obtain in each shipment.” says Samantha Costanzo, Rampart Roofing Production Coordinator. Currently, it’s more difficult to obtain materials from manufacturers like Malarkey and Owens Corning. However, other brands like Certainteed are more readily available. As a homeowner in the market for a new roof, material shortages mean you may have to make compromises or plan ahead. You might find a roofing material and brand you like, but the shingle color you prefer may not be in stock. Alternatively, you may have to choose a different roof type or brand to get the shingle color you want. You might opt to delay your roof replacement project to get your desired roof type and color. If you do this, please be aware that hail damage causes rapid deterioration and leads to leaks. You also have to be careful to follow your homeowners insurance policy requirements. Most companies require you to file a claim within a year of the date of loss.

2023 has been one of the most eventful hail years recorded in Colorado history and it’s not over yet! While it may seem like a good idea to delay your project, you may have to make some tough choices. You might not get your first choice of roof type or color due to widespread material shortages this year. When hail hits, we recommend getting your roof repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Doing so prevents further damage. Was your home impacted by hail in 2023? Give us a call at (719) 487-7663 or contact us online to schedule a free roofing inspection.
