How Insurance Claims Work During a Roof Replacement: What You Need to Know

Does Your Home Have Hail Damage? Here’s How Insurance Claims Work During a Roof Replacement

If your roof has hail damage, your homeowners insurance policy should cover the cost to replace it, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

First, it’s important to review your homeowners insurance policy document before you file a claim. You should be familiar with the cost of your deductible and the type of coverage you have. It’s possible you have a higher deductible for wind and hail than for other damage.

Second, it’s extremely common for your roofer’s cost estimate and your insurance adjuster’s estimate to vary from one another. Most insurance adjusters are not roofing experts. Therefore, your adjuster is likely to miss a thing or two during an inspection. Additionally, some insurance companies routinely exclude certain items required for code or manufacturer’s specifications in their initial estimate. Construction can also be unpredictable. There are common roofing issues that will go undetected until your roofing project begins.

This is where insurance supplements come in. An insurance supplement is a document that shows the insurance company the true cost to replace your roof. This document includes the cost of materials, labor, and any items needed to install a new roof correctly. Occasionally, this can also include unexpected costs like replacing decking or removing additional layers of roofing materials.

How Insurance Supplements Work at Rampart Roofing, Inc.:

  • Your project manager will review your claim for any missing items needed to complete a full roof installation per local code and manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Our production team will work with the project manager to record any additional items during the roofing process—like decking not installed to code or additional layers of underlayment or shingles that need to be removed.
  • We will create an estimate with a revised total and submit it to your insurance company on your behalf.
  • Once your insurance company has received the supplement, they will review it to determine whether they will pay for the difference. This can take several weeks and they may not approve everything listed. This DOES NOT mean that we will bill you for items they do not cover. Our agreement with our customers is to only charge what insurance agrees to pay (with the exception of upgrades or additional items you chose.)
  • Once they have revised the initial claim to include any approved supplement amounts, we will send a final invoice to them and request that they release any remaining funds (depreciation and supplements) to you. We will follow up to be sure this has been completed.
  • We will also send you a final invoice, and payment is due once you’ve received final funds from the insurance company.

Your insurance estimate and your roofer’s estimate might not always match. Insurance supplements ensure that your roofing project will be fully covered and completed correctly. Understanding your coverage and the insurance claims process are an important part of getting your project done right. So is contacting a license, local, and insured roofing company.
