5 Most Common Roofing Questions

Answers to some of the most common questions about roof replacements, shingles, and more.

  1. How long does it take to replace a roof? Most roofing projects take 1-2 days to complete. However, this can change depending on the size and style of your roof. Accessibility to your home and the type of roofing materials can also affect the length of time required to complete a roof replacement.
  2. Can you roof over existing shingles? Roofing over existing shingles is against code in both El Paso and Teller counties. Additionally, a roof with multiple layers may not be as effective since shingles need to be laid as flatly as possible to function properly. Complete roof tear-offs are beneficial because they allow your roofer to inspect the condition of your roof decking and underlayment, and make replacements, as necessary.
  3. When do I need a roof replacement? There are several things to look for when determining if you need a new roof. Consider the roofing material. If your roof is older, it may be nearing its replacement age. Moreover, if your roof has cracked or curling shingles, granule loss, and other irreparable damage, it is most likely time to consider a roof replacement. You may also need a roof replacement if your home easily develops ice dams, has roofing leaks, and has damaged flashings.
  4. How long will my roof last? The lifespan of your roof depends on the roofing material, how well it was installed, the weather, and other climate conditions in your area. For example, the average roof has a lifespan of 20 years. However, in hail-prone areas like Colorado, most roofs are replaced every 7-10 years. Tile, metal, and stone-coated steel roofs, like DECRA roofs, traditionally last longer than asphalt shingles. So, it is important to be aware of the average lifespan of the roofing material you choose. Correct installation can also increase the longevity of your roof.
  5. Can I replace my roof during winter? Yes! You do not have to wait until spring or summer to get a new roof. We work all throughout the year by working around the weather forecasts. Read our winter roof replacement blog post here to learn more: Can I Replace My Roof During Winter?
